How To Keep Your Spring Bulletin Boards Simple

Whether your blood pressure is rising from spring test prep season or your family calendar includes birthdays and a busy spring sports season, bulletin boards are the last thing on your mind for that final stretch of the busy school year. Some years, I use a timeless apple themed bulletin board for the full year like this one but other years I know that the perfect bulletin board can re-energize both students and the teacher. Let’s look at some easy bulletin board ideas that can keep your classroom seasonal this spring.

I always want my students to see themselves on the walls so that this is their classroom and not my classroom. A seasonal heading and plenty of space for student work is a win-win. The teacher has flexibility to update as often as they would like with any subject of work (or even a mix of subjects). Students have a space in the classroom to take ownership over and share with visitors and may even be able to select and post their own work once you have provided an inviting space.

It is important to know your community and pause to reflect on if Easter Eggs would be considered too religious or simply a colorful part of spring. If you already do an egg decorating craft, this would be a natural place to display it. This bulletin board could just as easily hold a spring writing assignment, outstanding test score, or even a certificate from a recent achievement if you leave space for vertical and landscape orientations.

While this photo uses clothespins to hold student work I have also seen teachers use clipboards with solid colored backgrounds. A student work display is always a staple in my classroom.

Gratitude practices are not limited to the month of November and I know that we teach social emotional learning all year long. In the spring I find my students often need a pep talk before the final stretch of the school year. This bulletin board sometimes focuses on gratitude at the end of a long, cold winter but can also show something they are really proud that they have accomplished so far in the school year. I have also seen it become a wall of kind acts that others have done in the classroom to spotlight positive behaviors.

These simple shamrocks could easily spruce up a teacher’s lounge and become a place where staff members are acknowledged for their above and beyond contributions to the school community. Spring is a great time to pause and share some gratitude.

Every teacher starts their countdown at a different time but I love handling the “how many days of school are left?” questions with an exciting bulletin board. Each day a student can pop the balloon with the highest number to reveal an activity or treat to make that day special. A countdown bulletin board can keep attendance strong until the finish line and keep morning meeting excitement strong. Balloons are an instant morale boost and you can fill them with homework coupons, photos of a favorite memory from the year, or celebrations of an amazing concept that you learned together that school year.

The spring is hectic but taking a moment to create a simple spring bulletin board really pays off. I love these spring bulletin board letters because I can type the bulletin board title and print only the letters that I need. This saves ink and saves me time as I don’t need to search through a giant box of letters to hope I have the letters that I need for what I want to spell.

When I take down the bulletin board, I save the title in a gallon-sized zip top bag for the following school year because these simple bulletin board ideas are flexible enough to meet the needs of a different grade level or student group each and every year.
