How To Keep Your Summer Bulletin Boards Simple

While some teachers set up their fall bulletin boards when they leave in the spring and don’t think about classroom decor all summer, some are shopping for summer classroom decor. Extended school year special education programs still want seasonal bulletin boards that are quick and easy to pull together. Summer camps find themselves going on outings or spending most of their time outdoors but a little door decoration can go a long way. Let’s look at some easy bulletin board ideas that can keep your classroom seasonal this summer.

When I am in the building with students for the summer months but don’t have physical student work samples to post, I just pull together a quick seasonal door decoration like this one to make the classroom look pulled together and cared for. This is a great activity for that first prep session when your mind is still swirling with ideas and triaging what on your to-do list needs to be done first. Channel that nervous energy and make something that will make you smile each morning when you enter the building.

At the start of the summer session I don’t have any work samples or pictures of our adventures but I do have a class list. We know that students and summer campers alike love to feel welcome by seeing their name in the space. A quick seasonal door headline with student names can stay up for the whole summer OR you can replace the names with pictures of activities that have taken place during the summer each Friday before parents pick-up.

If your students are spending a lot of their time inside the classroom then you might consider using the same approach for a traditional bulletin board. A simple seasonal heading can be flexible enough for the whole summer session. Add photos of the activities the students have been working on, list the skills you are focused on each week, post events that are coming up soon, or fill the bulletin board with pictures.

These editable bulletin board letters are my favorite ones to reach for. I can type in any seasonal heading and print just the letters that I need. I don’t have to spend time digging through a box trying to find enough letters to spell what I have in my mind.

When you take down your summer classroom decor save the title in a gallon-sized zip-top bag for the following school year because these simple bulletin board ideas are flexible enough to meet the needs of a different grade level or student group each and every year.
